MotioPI Frequently Asked Questions
What is MotioPI?
MotioPI is a free Java-based application designed for IBM Cognos BI administrators. It gives you insight into your Cognos environment in a lightweight, easy to use application launched from Motio's website or from your desktop.
How does MotioPI launch?
MotioPI is launched using Java's WebStart technology. When you click on the link, WebStart downloads the files from Motio's webserver to your machine. From there, it runs just like any other Java desktop application.
What do I need to run MotioPI?
To launch MotioPI, you need Java WebStart, which comes pre-packaged with Java's JRE(1.4.2 and later) or downloaded individually. To run MotioPI, you need JRE 1.6 or later.
For more information on running WebStart applications, including how to run applications in offline mode, you can visit this article.
What credentials do I need to run MotioPI?
Because MotioPI queries Cognos for various objects, such as user access and configuration settings, a login with administrative capabilities is required to connect to your Cognos instance.
What happens to the credentials once they are entered?
MotioPI stores the credentials in a small encrypted file on your disk. This information is saved so that the user can select from a list of previously-accessed instances without having to provide credentials. This file can be found in the Application Data folder (C:\Documents and Settings\<userid>\Application Data\Motio PI on Windows machines.).
What versions of Cognos do you support?
Currently, we only support Cognos 8.3 and 8.4. We plan on supporting future versions as soon as they are made GA.
When trying to launch MotioPI, I get the following exception: "FailedDownloadException: Unable to load resource: http: //www.inmotio.com/investigator/8.x/MotioPI.jnlp"
This typically happens when you are behind a Proxy Server/Firewall. Launch the Java Control Panel, on the General Tab click on the button: "Network Settings...", from there you can configure your proxy settings.
